If you want to be sure if a food item is a real organic crop, you need to know what labels and markings to look out for.

Here's how to know if the food you're buying has an organic compound or two:

1. Break the seal.

If the product bears the USDA organic seal, you can be sure that you are buying at least 95% organic ingredient content. The USDA’s official organic seal is white and green. If your products have gone through organic production, they will have this seal. If they contain only 70% organically produced ingredients, they can have an organic label that says “made with organic ingredients.” However, they won’t have the USDA seal.

2. PLU sticker, anyone?

If you want to know if a fruit or vegetable went through a chemical process during its development, see its Price Look Up (PLU) Sticker. If the produce has undergone legitimate organic farming practices, the 5-digit code will begin with 9. Compared to organic ones, nonorganic foods will have only 4 digits.

3. Have you been to the farmer's market?

Though you won’t be completely sure, most organic food is sold at farmers' markets at a lower price. It still applies that if you claim to be “organic,” you should have the paperwork to prove it. If you really want to make sure, you can ask the vendor for their certification as organic.
